How Custom Rigid Drawer Boxes Are Made

Every rigid drawer box has two parts: an outer sleeve open at one or both ends, and an inner tray that slides out. Both are built from thick greyboard, then wrapped in printed or specialty paper that folds neatly over every edge.

The board is what makes them so strong. We use 1.5 mm to 3 mm greyboard, depending on product weight and box size. Light items like jewellery and cards suit 1.5 mm. Heavier products such as candles, glass bottles and electronics need 2 mm to 3 mm, so the sleeve won't bow and the tray slides smoothly.

Unlike folding cartons, custom rigid drawer boxes arrive fully assembled. There's nothing to fold or glue; your team just places the product inside.

Getting the Drawer Fit Right

The slide is the whole experience, so fit matters more on rigid drawer boxes than on any other box style. Too tight and the tray sticks. Too loose and it falls out when the box is tilted.

We build a small, controlled gap between tray and sleeve, sized for the board thickness and wrap paper. Rigid Drawer Box Styles

Single drawer box. One sleeve and one tray, the classic style for jewellery, cosmetics and gift sets.

Double or multi-drawer. Two or more trays stacked in one sleeve, ideal for product collections, sample kits and advent-style reveals.

Open-ended sleeve. Open at both ends so the tray can be pushed out from either side.

Closed-end sleeve. Closed at the back so the tray only slides one way, giving a neater look and firmer hold.

Window sleeve. A die-cut window, with or without PET film, shows the product before opening.

Magnetic drawer box. Small magnets hidden under the wrap hold the tray shut during shipping.

Pull and Opening Options for Sliding Drawer Boxes

A good pull makes sliding drawer boxes easy to open and adds to the reveal. Choose from a satin or grosgrain ribbon pull, a half-moon thumb notch cut into the sleeve, a metal or beaded knob, a printed paper tab, or a die-cut finger hole in the tray. Ribbon colour can be matched to your brand palette.

Inserts for Custom Rigid Drawer Boxes

Inserts stop products from shifting when the tray of your custom rigid drawer boxes slides. Options include EVA foam cut to your product's shape, card inserts with die-cut slots, velvet- or satin-wrapped inserts for jewellery and watches, and moulded pulp for an eco-friendly option. Multi-product kits can use dividers to keep each item in its own section.

Wrap Papers and Finishes for Custom Drawer Boxes

The sleeve and tray of custom drawer boxes can share one design or carry two different ones, for example, a black printed sleeve with a gold foil tray. Wrap options include printed art paper, kraft paper, textured and specialty papers, linen, and faux leather.

Finish the print with gloss, matte, or soft-touch lamination, then add spot UV, hot foil stamping in gold, silver, rose gold, or holographic, embossing, or debossing. Print the inside of the tray too, a spot many brands use on their custom rigid drawer boxes for a thank-you message or a QR code.
