Slipcase Styles We Make
Standard slipcase. The classic open-ended case has five sides and one open edge, so the spine stays visible. It's the right choice for a single hardcover, a special edition, or a journal.
Thumb-cut slipcase. A half-moon notch is cut into both large panels so readers can grip the book and pull it out. We recommend a thumb cut for any snug-fitting case, because the book stays easy to remove.
Ribbon-pull slipcase. A ribbon is fixed inside the case and sits behind the book, so pulling it slides the book out. It suits premium editions where you want the cover artwork left uninterrupted.
Box set slipcase. One case holds two or more volumes side by side with the spines facing out. It's the standard format for series, trilogies, and anniversary collections. We can add dividers or inserts to stop the books from shifting.
Fold-over slipcase. This slipcase has a hinged flap that folds across the open edge. It gives extra protection for shipping and gifting while still opening quickly.
If you need a fully enclosed case, such as a magnetic clamshell or a lid-and-base box, see our Custom Book Boxes.
Materials and Construction
Most book slipcases are built from rigid greyboard, which is then wrapped in a printed or decorative cover. The board gives the case its strength, and the wrap gives it its look. We match the board thickness to your book's size and weight. Heavier coffee-table books and multi-volume sets get thicker board, while single novels and journals get slimmer, lighter cases.
Wrap options
- Printed art paper. Full-color artwork runs across every panel, finished with gloss, matte, or soft-touch lamination.
- Bookcloth. A woven cloth wrap gives a traditional, library-quality feel and pairs beautifully with foil-stamped titles.
- Specialty and textured papers. Choose from linen-finish, leather-effect, and colored stocks.
- Kraft. A natural, uncoated look suits eco-focused brands.
For lightweight paperback sets or promotional editions, we also make slipcases from 18pt to 28pt paperboard. These are lighter and more economical than rigid cases, though less protective. Our team will recommend the construction that best suits your book and budget.
How to Size a Slipcase for Your Book
A slipcase only works if it fits. If it's too tight, the book won't come out. If it's too loose, the book slides out whenever the case is tipped. Here's how we make sure every slipcase fits properly.
- Measure the finished book. For hardcovers, measure over the covers: the height from top to bottom, the width from spine to front edge, and the thickness across the spine. For a box set, stack the books together and measure the combined thickness.
- Allow clearance. We add a small allowance to each inside dimension to account for the board and the wrap. That allowance is usually a few millimeters, depending on the materials and whether your book has a dust jacket.
- Send us a copy if you can. A finished copy or a printer's dummy gives the most accurate fit. If your book isn't printed yet, send us the printer's final specifications (trim size, cover board thickness, page count, and paper weight), and we'll calculate the spine for you.
- Approve a sample. When fit is critical, we recommend approving a physical sample before full production.
Not sure about your measurements? Leave the size fields blank in the quote form, and our team will work them out with you.
Printing and Finishes
- Printing is available in CMYK, CMYK plus Pantone (PMS) spot colors, or unprinted.
- Lamination comes in gloss, matte, or soft-touch.
- Foil stamping is available in gold, silver, copper, holographic, and colored foils, and is ideal for titles and logos on the spine and front panel.
- Embossing and debossing create raised or pressed titles, author names, and ornaments.
- Spot UV adds a high-gloss accent over selected artwork.
- Inserts and dividers hold multi-volume sets securely in place.
Who Uses Custom Book Slipcases
Publishers use slipcases for deluxe editions, anniversary reissues, and multi-volume box sets. Self-published authors use them for limited signed editions and crowdfunding rewards. Brands and corporate teams order them for branded journals, annual reports, and gift books. Photographers and studios rely on them to protect and present photo books and albums.
Pricing and Minimum Order
Our minimum order is 50 slipcases per design, and the unit price drops as your quantity increases. The main factors that affect price are:
- Construction. Rigid greyboard costs more than paperboard.
- Size and board thickness.
- Wrap material. Bookcloth and specialty papers cost more than printed art paper.
- Finishes. Each foil, emboss, or spot UV step adds cost.
- Extras. Thumb cuts, ribbon pulls, and inserts add to the price.
Tell us your book size, quantity, and preferred finish, and we'll send you an exact quote within 24 hours, free of charge.
How Ordering Works
- Request a quote. Send your book dimensions and quantity, or leave the dimensions blank and we'll help.
- Get free design support. Our in-house team prepares your artwork or adjusts it to a correctly sized dieline.
- Approve your 3D proof. The proof shows every panel, the spine, and the finishes.
- Order a physical sample. This step is optional, but we recommend it when fit is critical.
- Production. Standard production takes 8–12 business days after proof approval, and rush production takes 4–6 business days.
- Delivery. We ship free anywhere in the USA.
Eco-Friendly Slipcase Options
Greyboard is commonly made from recycled fiber, and paper-wrapped slipcases can be recycled along with ordinary paper and card. For lower-impact packaging, choose a kraft or uncoated wrap, skip the plastic lamination, and print with soy-based inks.
