Packaging built for the way Orange businesses actually sell
The city of Orange runs on a mix that few Southern California cities can match. Old Towne has independent bakeries, gift shops and antique dealers selling face to face on the Plaza. Ten minutes away, along Katella and near the 55, sit medical device suppliers, supplement brands and e-commerce operations shipping nationwide. The packaging needs of those two groups look nothing alike, and a generic box catalogue serves neither of them well.
Custom Boxes Zone builds to specification instead. You give us the product dimensions, the stock, the finish and the quantity, and we produce a box that fits that product and carries your branding. There is no die or plate fee for a custom shape, no charge for design support, and shipping to Orange addresses is included in the quoted price.
Choosing your material
Material is the decision that affects cost, durability and appearance more than any other, so it is worth getting right before you look at artwork.
Cardboard (SBS / bux board), 12pt to 24pt. The default choice for retail and product packaging. It has a smooth clay-coated surface that holds full-colour printing cleanly, which matters if your brand relies on a specific colour match. 14pt to 18pt suits cosmetics, supplements and small consumer goods; 20pt to 24pt is better for heavier contents or boxes that will be handled repeatedly on a shelf.
Kraft, 12pt to 24pt. Uncoated, unbleached and naturally brown, with white and black kraft also available. Kraft is recyclable and biodegradable and reads as sustainable without you having to say so on the panel. Colours print softer and slightly muted on kraft, which is worth knowing before you approve a proof. It works well for soaps, candles, coffee, baked goods and anything with a handmade or organic position.
E-flute corrugated. A fluted layer sandwiched between two liners, giving real crush resistance while staying thin enough to print on and fold flat. This is the stock for mailer boxes, subscription packaging and anything travelling through a carrier network. If you currently ship a product inside a plain brown box with void fill, corrugated mailers cut both the damage rate and the filler cost.
Rigid board, 28pt and heavier. Chipboard wrapped in printed paper, cloth or specialty stock. Rigid does not fold flat and does not collapse. It is the format used for jewellery, watches, premium spirits, electronics and high-end gift sets, and it carries a noticeably higher perceived value than folding carton.
Box styles worth considering
Straight tuck end and reverse tuck end cartons are the workhorses for retail shelf products. Auto-lock bottom boxes assemble faster and hold more weight, which saves labour if you are packing by hand at volume. Mailer boxes with a tuck-in front panel give the unboxing experience most e-commerce brands are after. Window boxes with a clear PVC or PET panel let the product sell itself, which is useful for soaps, candles and food. Sleeve and tray constructions and magnetic-closure rigid boxes cover the premium end. Two-piece lid-and-base rigid boxes remain the standard for gifting.
If you are not sure which construction fits, send a photo of the product with a ruler beside it and our team will recommend a style.
Printing and finishing options
Printing runs in CMYK offset, with the option to add one or two PMS spot colours where an exact brand match matters. Pantone matching is the reliable route if your logo colour has to be identical across every batch.
Finishing is where a box starts to feel expensive. Gloss lamination sharpens colour and adds shine. Matte lamination hides fingerprints and gives a flatter, more restrained look. Soft-touch lamination has a suede-like texture and resists scuffing in transit. Spot UV puts high gloss on selected areas only, so a matte box with a glossy logo creates contrast you can feel. Foil stamping in gold, silver, rose gold or holographic film catches light directly. Embossing raises an element off the surface, debossing presses it in, and both add a tactile cue that photographs well.
You can combine these. A common premium build is 18pt cardboard, matte lamination, spot UV on the logo and gold foil on the wordmark.
Getting your sizes right
Box dimensions are always given as length by width by height, measured on the inside. Length is the longer side of the opening, width the shorter side, height the distance from the base to the opening.
Measure the product itself, then add clearance. Around 1/8 inch on each dimension is usually enough for a rigid product to slide in without a struggle. Add more if the product is soft, has an irregular shape or needs an insert. If you are including tissue, a card or a foam insert, add that thickness too.
Sending us a sample of your current box is the fastest route to an accurate quote. Failing that, artwork in AI, PDF, PSD, CDR, SVG, JPG or PNG works fine, and so does a hand sketch with measurements written on it.
What drives the price
Four factors move the number most: quantity, stock thickness, print coverage and finishing. Quantity has the largest effect, because setup cost spreads across the run. The per-unit price at 1,000 units is materially lower than at 50, and the gap widens again at 5,000. If you expect to reorder within six months, ordering the larger quantity now is almost always cheaper overall.
Heavier stock costs more per sheet. Full-bleed coverage costs more than a design with white space. Foil, embossing and spot UV each add a pass. What we do not charge for is the custom die, the printing plates or the design work, which on many quotes is a difference of several hundred dollars against a comparable supplier.
How the process works
Send your dimensions and quantity through the quote form on this page and you will have pricing within 24 hours. Once you approve the quote, our design team prepares a dieline and a 3D digital mockup for your artwork. You review it and request changes at no cost. Physical samples are available on request if you want to check the stock and finish in hand before committing to a full run.
After you approve the proof, production takes 7 to 8 business days for standard orders. Boxes ship flat to your Orange address, with free shipping included. Rush timelines can sometimes be arranged, so ask when you request the quote.
Sustainable options
Cardboard, kraft and corrugated stocks are all recyclable, and our kraft options are biodegradable and made from recycled content. Soy-based inks and water-based coatings are available on request. Beyond the material itself, a box cut to your product's actual dimensions is the single biggest environmental improvement most brands can make, because it removes void fill, cuts dimensional weight charges and reduces the volume shipped.
Start your order
Whether you need 50 boxes for a market stall in Old Towne or 20,000 mailers for a national e-commerce launch, the process is the same: dimensions, stock, finish, quantity. Send those four things through the form above, or call (800) 203-6657, and we will price it for you at no cost.
