California Packaging Rules You Need to Know Before You Print
If you sell in California, check any recycling claims on your box before sending it to print. California’s SB 343 requires that packaging produced after Oct. 4, 2026, may only use the chasing arrows symbol or the term “recyclable” or similar language if the material passes the state’s recyclability criteria. Therefore, the recycling programs that serve at least 60% of Californians need to take the material and sort it for recycling at scale.
Plastic-heavy packaging will look more dangerous than paper-based packaging (such as cardboard, kraft and corrugated boxes), which is routinely collected in California for recycling. But your brand is still liable for any claim that appears on your box. If your box is made from recycled paper, our design team can take a recycling symbol off your artwork or replace it with a factual statement (“Made from recycled paper,” for example).
